The Ras Magan Music Academy:
A Legacy of Indian Classical Music
Music, often described as the language of the soul, has the power to transcend time and space, connecting individuals through its universal appeal. The Ras Magan Music Academy stands as a testament to this truth, offering a sanctuary for those who seek to delve into the profound world of Indian classical music. Established in 2014, the Academy is rooted in the rich traditions of this ancient art form and follows in the footsteps of two legendary maestros: Sangeetacharya Chinmoy Lahiri and Padmabhushan Ustad Mohtaram Baba Abdul Rashid Khan.
The very name of the Academy, “Ras Magan,” carries deep significance, as it honors the legacies of these two great musicians. “Ras” is derived from “RASAN,” the pen name of Ustad Baba Abdul Rashid Khan, while “Magan” is the pseudonym used by Pandit Chinmoy Lahiri for his compositions. By adopting these names, the Academy not only pays homage to these illustrious figures but also underscores its commitment to preserving and propagating the rich heritage they have left behind.
The Ras Magan Music Academy was founded by Sri Subhomoy Bhattacharya, a devoted disciple of Pandit Chinmoy Lahiri, Pandit Shyamal Lahiri, and a Ganda bandh Shagird of Ustad Mohtaram Abdul Rashid Khan, the doyen of the Gwalior gharana. With a deep respect for the traditions of his gurus, Sri Subhomoy Bhattacharya established the Academy with the aim of nurturing talent and fostering a deep appreciation for Indian classical music. His vision was to create a space where students could immerse themselves in the study of this art form, guided by the wisdom and teachings of the great maestros.
Indian classical vocal music is at the heart of the Academy’s curriculum. The main art form taught is Khayal, a sophisticated and improvisational style of singing that is central to the Gwalior gharana. However, the Academy also places equal emphasis on other classical forms such as Dhrupad, Dhamar, Trivat, Chaturang, Vishnupad, and Khayalnuma. These forms represent the diversity and depth of Indian classical music, offering students a comprehensive understanding of its various facets. Additionally, semi-classical genres like Thumri, Dadra, and Ghazal are practiced with the same dedication, ensuring that students develop a well-rounded skill set that encompasses both the classical and semi-classical traditions.
Under the guidance of Sri Subhomoy Bhattacharya and a team of experienced and accomplished faculty members, who themselves are torchbearers of this glorious tradition, students at the Academy are given the opportunity to learn and grow in a supportive and inspiring environment. The curriculum is meticulously designed to cover various genres and styles, allowing students to explore the depths of classical music while also encouraging innovation and creativity.
In addition to its rigorous academic program, the Ras Magan Music Academy is actively involved in promoting Indian classical music within the community. The Academy organizes workshops, masterclasses, and concerts, providing students with valuable performance opportunities and fostering a sense of camaraderie among music lovers. These events also serve to introduce the beauty and complexity of Indian classical music to a wider audience, ensuring that this precious cultural heritage continues to thrive.
As The Ras Magan Music Academy continues to grow, it remains true to its mission of preserving the legacy of its founders while embracing the future of Indian classical music. Whether aspiring to become professional musicians or simply seeking to deepen their appreciation for this art form, students at The Ras Magan Music Academy embark on a transformative journey that not only shapes their musical abilities but also enriches their lives.
